In the 1930s and 1940s, Best Picture typically had between 8 and 12 nominees per ceremony. In the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, Best Picture was limited to five nominees per ceremony, no more and no less. Today, Best Picture is required to have a minimum of five nominees and a maximum of ten nominees per ceremony.

What if the other major categories (Director, Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, and Original/Adapted Screenplay) were allowed to expand and contract the number of nominees each ceremony like Best Picture was in the 1930s and 1940s, and is once again allowed to do so today?

What other nominees would we have seen?
