I was so surprised by how much I love this movie! I was ambivalent about going to see it but I saw it had a 96% approval rating and great reviews so I took a chance on it (the blurb I read didn’t sound all that great to me but it turns out it’s the execution of the material that matters and every single aspect is so well done: produced, written, technical aspects and esp. the acting). Carey Mulligan has never ever been better – she’s never been a particular favorite of mine but she sure delivered with this performance! My hope is that the critics will give it tons of recognition in their year end critics nominations and that it does really well with the Indie Spirits at the end of this month. I will say this: Carey Mulligan gives (in my opinion) a much more complex nuanced brilliant performance than either Glenn Close or Lady Gaga; it’s a matter of the various voters for GG’s, SAG, Oscars, etc. seeing the film and seeing for themselves. Jake Gyllenhaal is great too. Paul Dano is now a director who’s work I will look forward to since this is a fantastic directorial debut (a great sense of place, pace, camerawork, editing, a feel for actors, a brilliant script)! I give this film a rare A+! (: It will definitely be on my top 10 films list for 2018! (:

Carey Mulligan’s absence in the Best Actress conversation is appalling. I was really taken by the film, too.

I think it’s a matter of people seeing the movie – the only hope I have for her is for the critics to start giving her prizes and nominations that can’t be ignored. It is a brilliant performance.

Yea at this point having seen Star is Born, The Wife, Can You Ever Forgive Me, and Wildlife, Mulligan probably does give the best performance of the bunch, McCarthy being the only one that comes close. It’s a shame this movie is so out of the conversation

It has been out of the conversation until now and that is quickly changing.

Sometimes I forget Mulligan didn’t win for An Education

Managed to catch this last night, and I have to agree – WHAT a performance from Carey Mulligan seriously baffling she’s missing from any Best Actress conversation.

Also, Bill Camp and Jake Gyllenhaal should be in the (already stacked) Best Supporting Actor chat. Adapted Screenplay nod is a should be too, as well as Picture.

Just saw this, and WOW. Holy shit. The trailer for this movie didn’t grab me, but I really am a Gyllenhaal stan so I saw it anyways, and Mulligan should be in the conversation. Her performance here was right up there with An Education, and having seen Can You Ever Forgive Me, I would prefer her getting in over McCarthy. I hope more people see it, I would be all in for Gyllenhaal getting a Supporting Actor nod because of how thin that category is.
