2018 Emmy predictions BATTLE: ‘Atlanta’ vs. ‘Mrs. Maisel’ vs. ‘Barry’

Gold Derby editors Tom O’Neil, Chris Beachum, Marcus James Dixon and Joyce Eng clash over their predictions to win Best Comedy Series and acting at the 2018 Emmy Awards. Will “Atlanta,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “GLOW,” “Black-ish,” “Silicon Valley” or “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” triumph? Watch our slugfest video above or listen to the audio podcast version below.

“I have ‘Atlanta’ right now,” admits Eng. “It’s the cooler show of the two and it aired the most recently. The interesting thing is they haven’t competed against each other yet. We don’t know how they’ll go head to head.” But she reminds us that “Atlanta” already has an “Emmy resume” from last year when Donald Glover won Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing.

Dixon confesses, “I can be convinced either way, but I did switch to ‘Atlanta.'” Since “Atlanta” received two directing nominations this year and “Mrs. Maisel” only earned one, he wonders if that indicates “bigger support” overall for “Atlanta,” which also leads all TV comedies with a whopping 16 Emmy noms.

Beachum reminds us that neither frontrunner is laugh-out-loud funny, and that’s typically what Emmy voters go for when marking their ballots in Best Comedy Series. “I’ve got ‘Maisel’ now,” he adds. “I think it’s one of the two. [However, it aired] many, many months ago and ‘Atlanta’ just aired in the spring.”

O’Neil wonders if we’re all underestimating “Barry,” which he explains “far exceeded expectations” in terms of Emmy nominations. And what about “Curb?” “I think it could win,” O’Neil declares. “Upsets happen at the Emmys all the time. Without a ‘Veep’ here, it’s your HBO show, it’s the person they know and love — Larry David is a giant, a god, in this business of television.”
